Default [08.6] Houses of The Vandermark

House DeLauncey
The Hollows, Province Ruler
"Swift Justice, Sharp Bite"

The DeLauncey's have ruled over The Vandermark since 542 BF, when the First Kings of the Tribes of Dorwall descended from their snowy homeland, far off in the West, arriving on longboats first on Arbrecht. They found Arbrecht too close to the wastelands and generally uninhabitable, and thus moved down along the coast until they found the lush woods of the Vandermark, and settled there within. It was there that the Tribes of Dorwall adopted their worship of the Old Gods, upon discovery of the sacred pools within the woods of Waternesse. One of the many leaders of the First Kings, a man of broad shoulder and dark features, Nathius DeLauncey, settled in the Hollows with his family. Having led the remaining Tribes of Dorwall to the haven of The Vandermark, Nathius DeLauncey rose to greatness and was established as the King of the Mark. A DeLauncey has always been King of the Mark, until this title was dissolved in the War for Forsilvra. The DeLauncey's of present day still boast sharing the same blood as the First King's. The DeLauncey's are best known for their prowess with the bow, having donned the tri-arrow as part of their sigil, from the tales told of Nathius DeLauncey's three sons. Much of DeLauncey lore is seated in their predecessors establishment of their home in the Hollows.

Their house motto is "Sharp Bite, Swift Justice." A more colloquial rendering of the family is found in the oft-uttered phrase "DeLauncey's always keep their promises," reflecting the tales of DeLauncey descendents, particularly in the expulsion and banishment of Lupus DeLauncey, whom went on to abandon his given name of 'DeLauncey,' adopting his own of 'Fitzwulf' and relocating to Arbrecht. In more recent years, the Fitzwulf family has overthrown the leading Province Lord's of Arbrecht to establish their line as rulers. The Fitzwulf/DeLauncey tension has carried on for generations. The DeLauncey family boasts tall, lean children, with dark, chestnut hair, although black or auburn locks are not unheard of. Theirs is a proud name and DeLauncey's are more often than not known for their haughtiness and sense of superiority, but in general are an amicable family, whose devotion to one another is evident, known to abandon all outside ties and obligations for their family.

House Harrowgate, unlanded knights
"We Roar"

The Harrowgate House was established less than thirty years ago, when a common man of Arbrecht saved the life of a young Marcus DeLauncey. This man was Harrow of Dagonet's Brook, named for a Worshipper, and he was a master huntsman. Skilled with axe and spear, a mountain of a man, he stood before a great stag that was savaging the Lord, and tore it to shreds. A head full of red hair was his distinguishing feature, and so he was called 'The Lion'. Harrow was knighted Sir Harrow Harrowgate, and instantly fell on hard times. The House has risen with Dagonet, however, and is now well-off, if not wealthy. However, their recent rise means they are regarded as little more than commoners, and regularly spat upon. But never in Dagonet's presence.

There is no history to House Feran, except that a bastard son earned his place into knighthood...

House de Valle
Goldenmoore, Banner Lords
"Steady As the Tide"

House de Valle is one of the oldest lineages in the Vandermark, second only to the DeLauncey family, its first patriarch a fellow clansman of Nathius DeLauncey. Having landed on the island of the Mark at the same time, Adolphus Finn and the few of his remaining tribe took the coastline of Goldenmoore, attached to the rocky coast and crashing waves that reminded them so much of their former land. Adolphus Finn was already a situated leader of his minor tribe, but chose to abandon his surname upon arrival to the Vandermark, adopting the name 'de Valle' meaning 'of the Wall' to espouse his love for the jagged bluffs of Goldenmoore and his abandoning of the shackles of the old world. Trade and fishing are the primary sources of income for those who inhabit the city of Goldenmoore, with a minor profit from tourism, for those who wish to see the famed cliffside. The de Valle's follow the Old Religion, but the city has it's fair share of dividing religious sects. Goldenmoore does not enjoy the same level of activity as other port cities, but it is a popular venue for the spring festivals, and boasts some of it's own regional celebrations.

House de Valle is known far and wide for the strong, abundant golden-haired gene, and many a myth has arisen of the origin of the honey-toned tresses they sport. Family members are typically tall and slender, with soft, pale features, and the propensity to produce women. As such, it has not been unknown for a man of another House to take over the position as patriarch of House de Valle, through marriage to an eldest daughter, if there is a lack of a male heir. As such, de Valle has a tendency to trace their lineage through the women, rather than the men. de Valles are known for their unwavering loyalty, stalwart principles and unique musical talents.

House Landalis
Linsburg, Banner Lords
"Diversity, Spirit, Discipline"

House Landalis is located in Linsburg, a bustling port city of The Vandermark. Against the constant transition of people within the city, House Landalis has been a steadfast ruler, having kept the peace for many years. Though the old gods are not as popular in Linsburg as compared to the rest of the province, House Landis still holds steadfast to the religion of The Vandermark.

The main products exported in Linsburg are gems and metals. They have a large market presence dedicated to goldsmithing and gemsmithing. If you are looking for an exquisite piece of jewelry for the wife you had an affair on, Linsburg is the place you will find it. This however, has created a large disparity in the populace. Linsburg is home to some of the richest upper class, those that control the mines or shops, generally. Part of this though is that Linsburg contains many workers, ones who often suffer at the hands at the upper class. There is a huge income disparity in Linsburg, though for the most part, House Landalis has managed to keep it under control.

Other traders exist within Linsburg’s walls, as well. However, they have not settled as long, and though probably filthy rich, the older families hold them in contempt. Any family who is not long established in frowned upon in Lisnburg’s social circles. As a port city, there are many families who only stay for a time and use it as a place to hide.

House Landalis is full of many varied personalities, however their skin is usually slightly tanned and with brown or black hair. Their house motto is “Diversity, Spirit, Discipline."

House Fournier
Waternesse, Banner Lords
"True to the Mark"

House Fournier is one of the oldest homes in the Vandermark. They have been ardent worshippers of the Old Faith and are the Keepers of the Fall Rites which bring the faithful to Waternesse yearly. The men of the House are scouts and hunters, bringing to market the skins, meat, fowl and feathers that are their biggest export. The women are master craftsmen, creating the unique clothing, linens, and accessories that the House is known for around the known world. There is a ‘Druid’ dedicated to the Faith in the House (or in a vassal House) so that the Faith can remain intact through its teachers. Fall Rites are held in Waternesse and the festivities are always hosted at Maidenhead, the ancestral home of the Fourniers.

House Forrester
Vassal, Forrest Edge
"To the Old, We Hold"

House Forrester is the major vassal House sword to Fournier. With the death of Hadrien Fournier, the Forresters were asked to move in and around Maidenhead Castle in order to assist the Fourniers in rebuilding their House after the plague. All Forrester men are known to be great hunters and strong trackers. The women are beauties with light skin, dark hair and dark eyes who often join their men on the hunt and can be as good as them with a bow or dagger.

The Forrester family, like the Fourniers, follow the Old Gods. There are none as close followers as those in Waternesse and the keeper of the Rites and Sayer of Prayers is known as the “Druid of Waternesse”. He is the youngest son in the Forrester family and is expected to travel and spread the word where he goes. He is also expected never to marry and never to father any children.

House Remington
Vale of Harken, Banner Lords
"Strength, Wisdom, Longevity"

Note: We are not accepting applications for new characters in this house at this time.

Founded nearly three hundred years ago by a small family looking to flee their previous lands after they were torn asunder by civil war, the House of Remington settled into the Vale of Harken. Agriculture was their primary focus, serving the Province of the Vandermark.

Bringing with them their precious vines from the prior location, the family transplanted their grapes and their roots in the Vale, watching both flourish and grow. Wines and brandies were the Remington standard of income, but with a few intermarriages amongst the families, they expanded interests in growing herbs, flowers and other horticultural ventures to feed, succor and heal those around them.

Always loyal to the deLaunceys, their province lords, the Remingtons traditionally pay their tithes in wines and agricultural harvests rather than coins. A wise marriage beyond the boundaries of Forsilvra with one of Sarmartia brought a new, more stable grape into the growing patterns, allowing the Remingtons to establish themselves as one of the foremost vintners in the realm, yet their sphere of influence has also produced scholars and herbalists of renown in addition to the well-established hospitality of the House. The gates of their castle always stand open in welcome to anyone in the Vandermark or to host a visit from the Crown.

The Remingtons are typically intelligent, calculating and forward-thinking, yet their devotion to the family is unquenchable. The family encourages each member to follow one of the three branches – herbalism, martial prowess, or mercantilism – but they do not shun the embracing of other skills and talents. They are close-knit and clannish, giving daughters the same opportunities as sons though a daughter may not inherit the title of Banner Lord.

House Redwald
Vassal Lords
"Iron Within; Iron Without"

Note: We are not accepting applications for new characters in this house at this time.

The Redwald’s were originally known as the Harkin family at the onset of their landing on the island, but through time and various marriages soon became to be known as the Redwald family, primarily for their fierce countenance in battle, and their soldiers resembling a “wall” in their most common tactic, the skjaldborg, usually referred to as a “shield wall” by those not of the Redwald family, and while they are quite fond of the horses that they raise in the valley, it is not ideally suited for the breeding of horseflesh, and so they have to gain them from elsewhere. In this regards relying on mercantile trade of their common natural resources and produced goods such as armour, in order to acquire magnificent steeds which prized among the nobility. They are staunch followers of the old ways, with a deep respect for what is commonly called the “unknown”, though all of the gods are admired and feared, both for their benevolence and power.

They have been part of the Vandermark ever since the DeLauncey’s landed in 542 BF and have sworn loyalty and fealty from that point in history. Because of this, they were granted a holding in the Vale of Harken, first named by the family that had sat there first, and the name has stuck ever since. It is a fertile piece of land, known for its great trees, iron ore deposits, and swift flowing river named after legendary ancestor. Their homes are both a mixture of well-crafted stone buildings taken from the quarries in the hills, and superb woodworking techniques as accent features and roofing.

Redwalds are strong and hardy, with fair skin, exceptional height and broad shoulders, and hair colours ranging from dirty blonde to dark brown, and grey eyes.

House Hallewyn
Bindenhall, Banner Lords
"All is Flux"

House Hallewyn is a new house compared to the others in the Vandermark, formed after the war. Cautious in trusting others and yet forward-thinking in technology, they are an unusual combination of traits. “All is Flux,” their House words, is a way of life: they should prepare themselves for change and adjust their lives accordingly. Change and their bond with each other are the true constants. The Hallewyns pride themselves on their prowess with the bow, as well as herbal remedies. They examined and catalogued the majority of the plants in the forest around them and how to utilize their potential.

Secrets are forbidden within House Hallewyn, since if its own members are untrustworthy, how can they instill loyalty with other houses? Tact and cunning are also praised traits, which are connected with the self-preservation of the house. This does not mean that they will change sides with the flip of a coin, as their promises are their oaths. The Hallewyns have a variety of hair and eye colorings, but they are all lean and toned from training since they were young. The nobles and commoners live in the trees and have no fear of heights or the dark.

Vassel House
" Fly Above"

An unlanded knight family during most of the war, they were given land to be vassals to newly minted House Hallewyn after the war. Rather than build in the trees like their lieges, they built a smallhold in the forests. Using the climate around them, they began to trade in rare woods and other things, in addition to their traditional military might. In recent years, the House nearly went bankrupt on the back of Lord Artus’s gambling addiction, until he died when his debts got the best of him. His eldest, Martin, has struggled to raise the reputation of the House back up in the wake of Artus’s death. Martin’s daughter’s marriage to Lord Hallewyn is an important step in that.
