Isabelle is a true princess. She conducts herself with grace and dignity with every word, every step, and every action she takes. She knows the eyes of the court are always watching, something she was taught a child and the only girl. Her father, Acelin did not go easy on her, simple because she was female, and she was raised with the expectations of knowing both how to conduct herself as a lady and how to manage herself in the world of male politics. After all, whoever she wed would be from an influential family, and Isabelle was expected to know how to exert influence.

She knows what she wants and she is relentless to pursue it. Isabelle understands the politics of the court, and knows how to influence her husband, her nephew, and now her grand-nephew with the easy way she uses her words. She is steadfast in an argument, holding her ground without ever showing an ounce of anger. She drives her husband, most of the time, both socially and sexually, exerting her opinion, or herself with little fear of consequences. He might have been unruly once upon a time, but no longer. And that is just how Isabelle likes him.

Isabelle has her fears, and she avoids anything to do with them in order to keep herself from looking weak. An accident when she was young gave her panicked fear of heights and she avoids horses as much as she possibly can. She does not ride, at all, and finds excuses as to why she can’t. She used her many pregnancies for a long time, and now she uses her age and lack of experience from all those years of being pregnant and unable to ride.

Isabelle loves her children. That doesn’t mean she goes easy on them. Being of royal blood, or even of lordly blood, is a great responsibility, and she has high expectations of her children. Her sons and daughters both should make good political matches, attain high positions in court or learn to be gallant knights. When rules are broken, punishments should be swift and fierce. When rules are upheld, rewards should be given.

She is a talented singer, with a pure, high, soprano voice. She has always enjoyed singing, mostly to herself but she will sing to her husband as well, or her children.

Born on a cold winter morning, Isabelle Fontenot would be the last child of Acelin Fontenot and the coveted baby girl. With two strong sons and a little girl, Acelin couldn’t have been happier. While more children would have been welcome, Acelin’s wife, Lilliet contracted an infection in her pelvis after birthing Isabelle. She survived, but she was unable to become pregnant again. Acelin loved his wife far too much to replace her, despite years of trying for one more child. Thus, Alexis, Jacques and Isabelle were Acelin’s only children.

Her younger years were happy. The House scholar, Iwen Prothero, delighted in tutoring all three children. Isabelle’s elder brothers were protective of their younger sister, and this behavior was encouraged by both their parents and Iwen. Isabelle found herself delighting in the stories of old: The founding of her house on Caelain, the great war, Jondé the great war hero and the first king. She loved the tales of sorrow, of the Queen Callidora who threw herself from the western cliffs after the death of her twin girls, prompting King Joseph, first of his name, to proclaim “The Cliffs of Callidora”. Or of the Lady Grace, who’s lover died in battle, so she dedicated herself to the Five and lived on the mountain for the rest of her life, claiming that she needed to commune with the gods. Isabelle thought she might have just gone crazy, but she loved the way the woman was willing to sacrifice for love. Legend says if one climbs the mountain, her voice can still be heard, singing to the gods a song of lost love.

One afternoon when Isabelle was eight, she and her brothers were riding along the Cliffs of Callidora. A strong wind kicked up, whistling through the cracks of the cliffs, spooking her horse. The horse bolted and Isabelle was thrown. She rolled off the side of the cliff, grabbing wilding at everything she could to hang on, bloodcurdling screams pouring form her mouth. Fortunately, there was a small ledge and she caught it. Her brothers rushed to her side and pulled her up, but ever since Isabelle has been afraid of heights. Isabelle shook for ten days afterwards, huddled in her room. She never went back to the cliffs during her childhood and she does not ride horses anymore.

As she aged, her father expected the House Scholar to continue to push Isabelle to excel in history and politics. She learned the stories of old, of the time when the people’s of House Fontenot nearly starved to death four hundred years ago. She learned about the war, and about the great hero of their family, Jondé Fontenot. She was taught the lineages of all the great houses of the land, of the Fitzwulfs and the Harcourts, the DeLauncey’s and the Landalis. House Prothero from Larchan and Faerald from Caelain. And House Fleurant and Linnet and so many others. She was introduced to many of them as they came to court to pay their respects to the crown, to bring tidings or simply visit. She danced some of their children at the grand balls and cheered on their knights at tourney’s, always watching and assessing who spoke to who and who, which ones were strong, and who might make for a fit husband for herself.

At sixteen she was officially betrothed to Gaius DeLauncey of The Hollows. He was three years her junior, and they would not wed until later. Isabelle hated the thought of waiting and yet, never wanted the marriage to happen. The last thing she wanted to do was move to the Hollows, away from her brothers and parents. Yet, when the day came, a chilly January morning, as she stood before the Keeper of the Five and swore to Mirha and Enkil she would be faithful, while her new husband did the same to the Old Gods of The Vandermark, she wore the happy smile she knew her father wished for her to have. Both husband and wife made their oaths to each other as well, and then after the large ball - after all a princess didn’t wed often - Gaius carried his new bride to bed to consummate the marriage.

In the younger years of their marriage, Gaius was known for drinking and brawling. He had a temper that he hadn’t yet learned to control, and their marriage started off in termoil, with Isabelle utterly displeased with both the man and his family. She found The Hollows to lack the sophistication and air of the court, the environment she was used to growing up in. The DeLaunceys were haughty about their birth, close and set in their ways, and she never felt quite like she fit with what they always called the wolf pack. And she didn’t want to fit. Isabelle considered herself a Fontenot, and a princess. She was above these DeLaunceys, even if they could not see it. Isabelle and Marcus’s wife did find common ground, and a strong friendship grew between the two women.

Isabelle became pregnant immediately, likely on their wedding night, and within the first year of their marriage their first child, Demetrius was born. Another son, Marcus followed, and then two little girls, Aureline and Warrine followed. Isabelle loved all her children, but held high expectations of them. They might well be DeLauncey’s in name, but to her they were just as much Fontenot - just as much royal blood.

When Gaius was accepted as Authority of Welfare, Isabelle could not keep the smile off her face. Returning home to Forsilvra was all she’d ever wanted, and now she could raise her children in the true culture of the capital. The children had mixed feelings - some were excited about the change, while other wanted to stay in The Hollow. Her relationship with Demetrius strained because of the move, but her other children were too young to care that much. Shortly after arriving, she realized she was pregnant again.

At court, she pressed Gaius to give up his drinking and other less savory habits. He was a man of court now, a man of the council. Often she would bitch at him for his weakness, and over time she prevailed. His attitude calmed and many nights they would sit and discuss the matters of court and politics before making passionate love.

Her twin girls were born, and they were a joy to behold. Both Marcheline and Josephine were very much DeLauncey, yet at the same time, she found them both to be quite girlie. She adored them, perhaps more than her other children, and she was struck with how much she let them get away with compared to her other children. Four years later, her final son arrived, Feronius DeLauncey. Two years later, Josephine ended up in an altercation that resulted in a scandal with her husband beat the boy. Her brother, Joseph came to have a long talk with family, and eventually convinced them to send Gaius' children back to The Hollows, despite Isabelle’s staunch objections. In the end, the only child she got to keep was Feronius, as he was just barely reaching the age of two.

The stress of the loss of her children strained her relationship with her husband. Isabelle was torn between returning to The Hollows, a place she hated, to be with her children whom she loved, and remaining at court with her husband as was her duty. She wrestled with this inner battle for months, years even and for the first time returned to the Cliffs to sit and stare out at the ocean and think of the days past. Her nights were still filled with discussions on politics, but the sex vanished until one night when she and her husband finally reconciled. She could no longer blame him for doing what he’d thought was right, nor could she hate her brother for sending her children away either.

Then the plague hit. Her sister-in-law Corenna passed, then later her brother, Joseph. Stephane stepped into rule until he too caught the plague. It seemed as though the disease would never end, and thus Isabelle made a number of trips to the Hollows to visit her children, worry and fear that they too might catch the disease always plaguing her. During the last, when Feronius was twelve, he told his mother he wanted to stay. She let him. He needed to know his brothers and sisters and the home he might have grown up in.

Now, she is eagerly anticipating her children’s return to the capital for the celebration.

Writing Sample:

Isabelle was going to see her children! Normally a stoic woman, Isabelle knew she had a harder time controlling her emotions when it came to her children. She had spent far too much of her life away from them, and they had been raised in The Hollows as DeLauncey’s instead of with her and her Fontenot breeding. She hoped as Marchie and Josie approached marriage age they at least knew how to conduct themselves. Her twins girls had always been her pride and joy, maybe because carrying them had been so much more difficult than any of her other children.

She had been pacing her room until the moment the news arrived that the ships from The Vandermark. She checked herself in the mirrored glass - as a princess of the realm must always look perfect - and then headed down to the manor entrance to take the carriage to the docks.

Isabelle was determined to meet her chlidren in person, whether her husband choose to join her not.
