House Description:

House Sanjar originally came from the lands west of Ahestere. When the Hazir peoples came across the , they first sacked Susa, putting to slaughter the ruling family of the city. They moved on other cities, intent on taking over all of Ahestere, when the Linnet King offered them peace and lands. Jawhar SanJar considered this and agreed, and in return his sister, Yasmin SanJar was taken by House Linnet as Queen. The SanJars took over Susa, and while in name they were subject to the King, for years they considered themselves independent. Even now, the SanJars continue to stylize their ruler as Ali-Zayn rather than Lord.

The House intermarries with others, but only for men in the branches. The men in the main branch of the house always wed those of Hazir descent, or foreigners from Old Hazirm. They claim they wish to keep the main branch of their bloodlines pure, and that by remaining pure, they can better facilitate trade between Ahestere and Old Harizm. At times the people think of Susa as New Harizm, but House SanJar reminds them that the city is Ahesteri, and they are Ahesteri peoples. That the culture of Ahestere has been largely influenced by the Hazir is something House SanJar often boasts of. The only house they do not get along with is House Fleurant.

Like many in Ahestere, the city prides themselves as a place of trade. As the westernmost city, they receive many of the imports from western cities. Because they have no mountains to the south to protect again invaders, House Sanjar has also worked to build a formadible military that uses the techniques and weapons of Old Hazirm. They also hold a number of mines in the Tahkt-te-Arash from which Turquoise of many colors, gold and copper, from which jewelry and weapons are made along with imported Tin. Also, like many cities in Ahestere, the Susaians take pride in the arts. They are constantly in competition with Enos, as the styles of the original Ahesteri art are a stark contrast to that of Old Hazirm.

-------------------------------

[Appearance]

Cyrus is a tall man of 6'4", with a hard muscle body. He keeps his head shaved to hide the fact that he was already going bald.

-------------------------------

[Personality]

Cyrus has been groomed from birth to be the next Ali-Zayn of Susa. His father Darius has never given him an inch, pushing him to excel in every task set in front of him. Darius was a stoic man of high expectations, and while Cyrus respected his father for the leader that he was, Cyrus did not love him. His mother, on the other hand, is much adored, and she spent many hours telling him all the legends and myths of Old Hazir. Thus, he has a true love for the culture of his ancestors and shuns much of what is considered to be ‘Old Ahesteri culture’. While his father was very much a patron of Ahesteri culture, of ensuring that the old and the new always remembered they were now one, his mother never let go of her birth roots. Often she travels back to Old Hazir and she has taken Cyrus with her numerous times. He loves Hazir, and if he wasn’t lord and thus destined to remain attached to Susa, he would have moved to his mother’s home long ago. Even so, he takes great pride in being the Ali-Zayn, and would never shirk his duties.

He is opposite of his father in every way. While Darius would sit thoughtfully for hours, sometimes days, before making a decision, Cyrus comes to his conclusions quick, shooting more from the hip, going with his gut and moving on to the next matter. He isn’t one to fret over his choices either. What is done is done. If he made a mistake then his next move will be to fix it. He doesn’t let fear or unknown consequences slow him down. Inaction is worse than a mistake in his mind.

He can be extreme at times - his anger is great, his love is strong, his interest is intense. For all that he can appear to be irrational at times, Cyrus does care a deal for his people and his family. He sees the Linnets as an extended family, as their lineages both trace back to a common Queen. He respects Aashiq as his liege, but he would not follow him over a cliff or put his life on the line for the man either. Susa and the area surrounding him are far more important. Especially because Lismore is just too close to Enos, the home of House SanJar’s eternal and bitter rivals.

Cyrus loves hand to hand combat and has grown up excelling in the sword, the scimitar, the mace, and short range knife. He will fight with fists as well, and enjoys wrestling, a common tourney sport in Susa and Old Hazir.

When the mood strikes him Cyrus can charm the birds from the trees. Well spoken and genial he has little trouble in getting what he wants before others notice they have given in. As the eldest of many brothers, he spent his time as the leader of the little group of tigers, whether that was getting them into trouble or getting them out of it. He has a good relationship with most of his brothers, even if they disagreed often and fought because of it.

-------------------------------

[History]

Cyrus was born on a warm November afternoon. He was the first of many boys, and a few girls. He grew up with his brothers, tusling and getting into trouble the ways boys do. He had his tutors and his nursemaids.

When he was six, his mother took him to Hazir to visit her family. As the son of Darius, the ruler of Susa and Bahilu, the daughter of the Ali-Zayn of Hazir, he was considered royalty upon arrival and treated as such by his grandfather. He fell in love with Hazir, the grand arches and high columns that dwarfed what they had built in Susa. The palace was three times the size of that in Susa and the food and music and dancing seemed to go on all night, even though the little boy of six was often asleep before the sun went down.

When it was time for him to return home to Susa, Cyrus whined and cried and objected. He clung to the leg of his grandfather and said he never wanted to leave. But Karim Al’Jar told his young grandson that his duties were in the west, ruling the city of Susa as Ali-Zayn, and that he could visit anytime, but he must grow to be a strong leader, a strong ruler, and a strong partner of the people of his roots. Cyrus wiped his eyes and nodded, standing up straighter as though he realized he now had something to prove. From that day forward he dedicated himself to proving he could be the best leader Susa ever had.

When he was ten years old his family took a trip south. A border town had reported having skirmishes with the southern Maélazan peoples, and Darius decided his son and daughter should come with him on the visit. Relations with the Maélazan were constantly up and down, with the rulers dickering over the border lands and rights to the western mines. Their presence was one of the reasons Susa put so much effort into their military, as House SanJar had no intentions of letting go of their precious mines. The trip was fruitful, peace was settled and Cyrus was seen by his people as capable for a young boy of working by his father’s side.

But on the way home they were hit by a band of raiders who had traveled up from the south and hadn’t been aware the party were royals and well trained. In the chaos a stray arrow struck Dima in the stomach. She bled to death slowly and painfully, while Cyrus held her. He ignored the chaos around him, until the last of the bandits had been subdued and brought to their knees in front of Darius. Cyrus rose and crossed to his father, begging for permission to take vengeance for his sister. Although he was still young, he was strong. His father handed him a mace and Cyrus took to bashing in the head of the first man he came too. He hit him once and then twice and then went again and again, until Darius had to have two soldiers pull him off. The rest of the bandits were quickly dispatched and the once happy party returned to Susa to bury young Dima.

At sixteen, during a trip to Hazir, he met the beautiful Anzira Fi’Ra at one of the nightly parties. Daughter of a wealthy merchant of Hazir, she was everything Cyrus could have ever wanted in a woman. So smitten was he, that he courted her every night he was there, and asked for her hand in marriage to be his wife before he left to return home. When the pair turned seventeen, they were wed in all the grand styles of Old Hazir, with the long silken garb and six nights of parties. Their marriage was nothing short of perfect, and Cyrus could not have been happier when a son came a long a few years later. A daughter followed three years after and then, from no where, the plague came to Ahestere.

Susa shut her doors immediately to block out the effects, but Anzira was on her way back from a trip to Hazir when the entire party traveling with her caught the disease. Cyrus could do nothing but read letters of her progress, pacing away his time in the palace in Susa while she slowly died out in the open plains. The funeral was twice as long as the wedding, the time of mourning months long, and Cyrus was depressed for weeks until his mother finally reminded him of his grandfather’s words.

She told him that his father was sicker than they all knew, that at night he coughed up blood as though something was wrong with his lungs. Only she knew, and he forbid her to tell anyone. Darius would not appear weak. Balihu was afraid he would not live much longer. The people of Susa will need you, Cyrus. The gods of Hazir took her back but they have not taken you yet.

As she suspected, Darius passed away within the year. At twenty-seven, Cyrus became Ali-Zayn of Susa. He continues to rule, to raise his children, and puts off the pressures his advisers exert on him to take another wife.

[Writing Sample]

Cyrus set down the letter and sighed softly. With so much turmoil in the south, he wasn’t sure that now was the right time to be heading off on a pleasure trip to the capital. His loyalties were with Aashiq, not to some boy sitting on a chair. As long as Aashiq was happy with the crown, so was he.

“You should go.”

Cyrus looked up at the face of his mother. She had an uncanny way of knowing what he was thinking, as mother’s often did. He loved his mother dearly, which was more than he could say about his deceased father. Bahilu was frowning, mostly Cyrus knew, because she was unhappy that he was even considering skipping the thing at all.

“You need a wife. It would be a good time to find someone.”

“What makes you think I want another wife?” Cyrus shot back. “Anzira was... I have a son.”

“The people expect it. Your court expects it. One son does not make for a fruitful kingdom.”

Cyrus picked up the letter again, if only to avoid looking at his mother. Bahilu was right, he knew, but that didn’t mean he wanted to admit it. He didn’t even wish to speak about the subject. “They will have a tourney. I’ll fight in that, and that will be enough to show I’ve participated in whatever this boy king wishes.” He looked up at his mother, giving her a hard stare. He didn’t want to talk about wives. Five years later and the memory of Anzira was still fresh, still painful. That he couldn’t be there to hold her while she suffered was even worse. That his children had lost their mother made him ache. Bahilu relented, tossing her hands up lightly.

“At least you’re going,” she whispered softly in Old Hazirm.

“Yes, I am going. So are you,” he replied in the same. “And the children and my brothers.” If he was going, the whole damn family would come too. Or most. He still needed to leave someone behind to make decisions and ensure that the Maélazan stayed on their side of the mountains. “You may go tell them.”

Bahilu bowed her head lightly and headed out. Cyrus sighed and looked out the window at the sky. At some point he needed to let go... just not yet. He wasn’t ready.

Smexeh.

One thing I noticed randomly:

Quote:
As both the son of the ruler of Susa and the daughter of the Ali-Zayn of Hazir...
Should that be son as well? Second paragraph of history.

Otherwise, I approve. Even if you don't need it, I approve. Hawt. <3

No, it's right. His mother, Balihu, is the daughter of the Ali-Zayn of Hazir <---- Hazir is the country to the east where his ancestors are from. Typically the lord of Susa weds a woman from Old Hazir to keep their bloodlines strong. The Ali-Zayn of Hazir would be like their King, making Cyrus the nephew of their king.

Does that make more sense?

How does that sound?

It makes sense! To me the sentence just read like you were talking about him. Not a huge problem.

Edit: That sounds perfect!! <3
