Name:christine Contact: inmycaravan gjgame4me@yahoo.com flikenstein@gmail.com [Public Application] Character Name: Elwen Kyffin Faerald Character Age: 35 Gender: Female Birthday (including year):206 Current Location:Caelain House Kyffin by Birth! Faerald by Marriage! Insert banner but formerly Insert Banner House Description: The Kyffins were originally vassals of House Faerald; however, centuries ago they were instrumental in overtaking a very strategic Cemric settlement, Weallan, and this is the place they now call home. They are located far inland along the banks of one of Caelain's major rivers; their isolated position makes them a primary target for the attacks of unruly Cemric princedoms. The banner is fiercely loyal to House Faerald and dedicated to ending the chaos caused by Cemric raiders. They prefer compromise over war, and should diplomatic efforts fail, fight only until such a point as another opportunity for negotiations arises. With a few exceptions, House Kyffin has traditionally only intermarried within Caelain, even marrying women from vassal families and Cemric tribes in order to foster peace. The House is, and always has been, dedicated primarily to the health and welfare of Caelain and Forsilvra (which after all boasts a family of Caelish origin), and has seldom involved itself in foreign affairs, much to the irritation of the rare more globally-minded members of the family. The Kyffins are hardy folk; they are no strangers to suffering, be it from blight or war or plague, and complaint is frowned upon. They have little patience and respect for houses who seem faint in the face of the slightest hardship. Their nobles are hardworking and down-to-earth, and they express an uncommon concern for and even, to an extent, camaraderie with their smallfolk. Though a certain amount of scholarly education is encouraged, it is viewed as far less important than practical, hands-on skills learned by experience -- be it archery, harp-playing, or healing. Kyffins are typically short, small-boned brunettes and easy to underestimate by looks alone. Their banner has variably depicted an oak tree or an acorn; it is traditional after times of significant loss in the family to change the banner from an oak tree to an acorn to acknowledge the hardship while simultaneously recognizing the potential that lies therein. The Kyffin motto is: "Up from acorns, oaks." Player Base: Samantha Morton Appearance: A wee woman, Elwen only stands barely 5 foot tall. She keeps her brown hair long for fear of being mistaken for a 12 year old boy even if she wears it up to get it out of the way. Her looks are quite plain but she has a kindly, soft, moon shaped face. Personality: Elwen is soft spoken and often thoughtful. Most of her thoughts come through the expression on her face rather than through words but when she chooses to speak she does so with heart. Because she seems quiet and is quite small she comes across as timid but that couldn't be further from the truth. She has a willing spirit. She has never been afraid of change and is adaptable and laid-back unless a strongly-held value is threatened. But then, she is empathetic by nature. Striving to understand the person and abilities of those around her rather than take in account her first assumptions. Although noble in class, she believes she is mostly noble by marriage, believing her kin more guardsman of the greater good rather than just greater. She feels more in common with the small folk and sometimes wishes to live as simply. Often this comes across as uncouth to most of the greater nobility. Her family mean the world to her. She would do anything for her Lord and children. She is extremely loyal. History:It was always so strange for her to be called Lady. For, although she was part of a capable house, luxury was scant and what was spent was spent on the necessities. There were never silks or jewels. Hand maidens? They were few- house folk. Handy indeed but never less than servants. Most were treated as part of the family. It was a necessity that made the Kyffin who they were. Elwen was no exception even if she was the youngest daughter for some time. She was the baby but never babied. She found out quite early that, for her, it was better to make careful, quiet observations of the world around her. Having two older brothers it was very difficult to ever get a word in edgewise. She learned quickly that the less she said the more value her words had. The more she spoke the less people listened. Life was fieldwork and field play. There was hardly a day that her skirts weren't stained with the mid and muck of an honest days labor.. She heard of other Lady’s who would toil their days away on their appearance but for Elwen, life had always been practical. It was this practice that has made her empathetic to the world around her and the smallfolk who never had the fortune she had. Days were spent learning, crafting, creating and growing. Her hands have never recovered from this labor. Calloused and used she has nothing of the dainty lily hooves of the other pretty darlings and their silly worries. But, life became different when she found she was to be married to Tysilio Faerald - A man she hardly knew but knew a lot of. The match wasn’t easy at first. She thought him foppish and silly. Perhaps he thought her a mud heaped frog princess. She doesn’t know. He could sing though. Perhaps that was the first thing she took notice of and appreciated. For she could play the harp! The Kyffins were famous for their harp playing after all (or some). Many nights the pair could be found in front of the fire. The only noise was the music they made. Later a different music would be made and soon after Aiden, Deirdre, Brennan and Artur would be born. A lovely family. Their closeness only grew as the turmoil grew around them. The plague was the thing that knocked Elwen the most. She never thought she would recover from the death of her youngest. She knew she was supposed to go on for the sake of her other children but it was hard to pull back into a world that had been so cruel. If it wasn’t for the strength of her family and the love that binds them she might have plummeted off a tower and ended her pain. Now she must worry about the fate of her homeland. Actually the fate of the kingdom! She wishes for another baby. Yet, she knows that she might have to wait for things to settle down and for peace to return. Writing Sample: “Let me help you milady.” It was Alice. She was always so present. Elwen couldn’t do anything without Alice wanting to help. She supposed it should have been a blessing. Many small folk had bitter lives. Their legs bowed out from lack of nutrition, their hands blistering with the amount of work they needed to do to make it through the seasons and here she was complaining inwardly about how difficult it was to be waited on. Even the clothes she wore could not be worn if there was no one to serve her. Elwen told herself she must be kind. Patience was important. Gentleness a gift to give.“Yes…” she said and even though she knew she should be grateful she felt constriction as her servant moved over and it wasn’t just because she was binding her into the dress with a hard tug of laces. “It feels tight…” “Do you want me to let it out...” Alice was holding a lace in each hand, her knuckles white as she held the form. “No…It will ease once I start moving.” The face in the mirror should have been a joyful reflection but instead she felt strange. A boy was dead and even if he was a Fitzwulf she felt unsettled and guilty about partaking in a celebration. It felt obscene to don a gown and go dancing. Thank the seven for the mask. If only she could hide her dismay from her husband. He was sure to see her emotions plainly. Alice tied the laces together into a bow and the fabric released some of the tension and Elwen could feel the breath come easier. “You look lovely my lady.” Alice was so young. Elwen missed her Gran but time had happened and the woman who she had spent most of her life with had paid the price of age. The woman had gone peacefully. Alice was her new companion. She was a sweet girl…but very eager. Elwen knew she shouldn’t fault her for that. This was a good trait to have. “You are too kind.” She replied to her serving girl. She tried a smile on and it made her feel better especially when Alice returned it.
