"Calm Before the Storm"
The Storms are an ancient royal house, who trace their ancestory and founding back to ancient Arbrecht war heroes such as Sigmund the Stormlord, who led the conquest of the Tivark kingdom and established the Kelaillan Stormlands, and Torygg Stormcaller who united the peoples of ancient Arbrecht. They rule their island hold from the mountain stronghold of Strun Bah Qo in the western mountains, over the united houses of Kelailles. Their words are "Calm Before the Storm."
The Storms and their people follow their own religion, the Way of the Storm, and are held together by ancient traditions foreign to even the rest of Arbrecht. The Stormlands bear a higher percentage of military than any other hold in the kingdom, being descended from great warriors and a culture well-tested in combat. Some of the most remarkable knights and highly disciplined soldiers are found in Kelailles, though they are much outnumbered by other houses.
Eldric doesn't like taking life too seriously, he's very laid back, comfortable and openly confident in himself and his conduct. He is a pragmatic and idealistic leader, and a very daring contender in the political sphere of Arbrecht. He handles tradition with a flexible mind, not attaching himself to somethings that would otherwise restrict him in what he can and can't do.
Having a witty and charming personailty, along with his almost cocky level of self-confidence, has made Eldric a very popular lord in Kelailles. He has a friendly ear to praise and criticsm alike, he tries to keep a close and engaging relationship with his officers and people, so he can act in their best interest.
Eldric has been a devout follower of religious tradition in the Stormlands, following the Kelaillan practice of the Way of the Storm since his childhood. Given the circumstances and belief surrounding his birth, and his given name, he has never distanced himself from conducting regular prayers. He often visits the Pillars, a height of four mountains on the eastern side of Kelailles, considered in legend to be what stands between them and the afterlife; for meditational pilgrimages.
Had he not been crowned Stormlord, Eldric would have pursued knighthood, following his father and uncle before him. But it was not to be, not yet at any rate, the needs of the hold came before his own pursuits. He is an accomplished swordsman, which his brother and uncle can attest to, and is formidable jouster. Eldric also is an art enthusiast, music and theatre are among what he is particulary a fan of.
Eldric is a very trusting and candid individual, two attributes which could be his downfall. While he promotes a big game and knows what he means to do, he is young and has a wealth of inexperience behind him, a promininent source of concern among his councilmen inparticular.
Eldric was born in 218, amidst a storm that raged the duration of his mother's labour in Strun Ban Qo. This led to the belief of his father Mathos, that he was blessed by the spirits of the Eternal Storm, he was given the name Eldric in honour of, and to bless him with the power of that storm. Like his brothers before him, he was trained with the sword from the moment he could comprehend one and was well set on his way to being a knight by the age of eight, and following the warrior path that many of his kin did. He was the most well favoured of the three sons of Mathos Storm, being the circumstances and omens surrounding his birth, but he was by no means the favourite; that was always Garland, the best fighter and most promising leader of the three, and to top it off he was the first in the line of succession.
While Garland was taught predominantly by their their uncle Ragnar, who was and is believed to be the best knight in Kelailles. Eldric and Lorgar were under the personal tutelage of their lord father, the reigning Stormlord, who had just succeeded his elderly father on account of his declining health. He would give his sons some of the best training they could have, the sons of the Storm were some of the proudest and capable fighters across the kingdoms, and they took pride in the edge they had in style, finesse and flow of combat.
By the time Kelailles had heard of the plague, each of Mathos' sons were taking score on how many times they had bested one another in skill testing playfights, at that time when the plague was gradually accosting every hold on the Arbrecht mainland, pushing south from Ernsaw, their father ordered harbour lockdowns on their hold, and took the risk of closing trade for the duration, hoping it would pass quickly south, leaving what had already been hit in the north behind. Lorgar fled Kelailles a few weeks earlier with his new wife, and travelled south with her in tow, not intending to let the plague catch him or her. The lockdown despite initially proving effective, didn't work in the end, whether the wind carried the foulness of it, or unreported carriers had broken the border barriers, no one knew, one thing was for sure though, the plague was in Kelailles. The first Storm to fall was Eldric's grandmother, who was already ailing to begin with, so they took the plague as a justice, giving her an ease to the pain she already bore. In the same year many of the family fell ill, his uncle Hayle took a nasty bite of the plague and went down fighting.
Next went his mother, that one hurt. It was that one that opened his father to contraction, his defences just seemed to give up resisting and accepted it. Yet his father fought through it for many years, it grew too much just when the family thought he could see it through to recovery, in the end he took his own life in the agony. Meanwhile, Eldric's grandfather was championing the plague, he seemed to grow stronger as the years weighed on him, with no more signs of slowing down. That at least gave him some measure of happiness, having just been devastated by the loss of his father. The plague started to receede however, and Eldric's elder brother Garland was crowned in the winter of 239, yet died from his own contractions suddenly a day later.
With Eldric's brother, Lorgar's location unknown, and him having abandoned the idea of becoming a lord, the council turned to the only remaining child of Mathos, Eldric. His uncle Ragnar and Lord Rickard Reyne crowned the young man on the New Year, where they also said farewell to the bodies of the fallen, allowing their spirits to ascend in the form of smoke to the skies above to join the Eternal Storm on the Field of the Fallen. The same year the plague wrapped up and it's death toll finally lessened, the commons rejoiced, and proclaimed it the good fortune of the new Stormlord.
However even with the omens, Eldric's rule began with some sideways glances from his peers, both from being young and in his methods. He had been tutored on matters of the law and leadership since he was a child, yet he radically changed court proceedure, which didn't go smoothly at first. He laxed the stress of discipline in the council and encouraged everyone to be themselves and propose what they would like, not matters at hand, scripted discussion as was the norm. This caused many to seek the private council of Ser Ragnar Storm, who rebuffed them and urged that Eldric was only doing his best. Given time and patience the new system garnered some popularity, and Eldric's way became accepted by his council.
During his time of ruling, he began breaking free of the Storm's seat of power and expanded his horizons across the hold of Kelailles, mingling with the commons and regularing taverns and art galleries, shopping personally, and generally getting to know his people, for they were his people now. He drew their love and acceptance as the months went by, the name and fame of the reigning Lord of the Storm spread across the northern kingdom. It wouldn't be long until the plague was officially decalred over and a grand celebration was announced in the capital, Lord Eldric thought this the perfect chance to see the ruling seat of the entire kingdom, and make himself some friends across the kingdoms.
Brotherly Sport (Sample)
"Hey, Gar! High left!" he cried as he swung his wooden sword down against his brother's left leg with a satisfactory crack. "Fuck! ...Ass!" Garland responded by swinging his shield outward with his left arm and catching Eldric on the brow of his helmet, "Woah..," he stumbled backwards a couple of paces, regaining himself and his brother advanced, wooden axe and shield firmly in hand. Garland was sporting silver and green, Eldric had also donned green, but he had gold, where Garland was silver, they should have a colour in common he had relected on earlier. He raised his shield, his brother's axe raised in an overhand arc and cracked hard against the oak shield in Eldric's left arm, both men reeled and soon recovered launching at one another again.
Sword and axe seemed to take turns leaving chips on each other's respective shields, both blazing the proud crowned stag and bolt of House Storm. "Come on lads, a fight is no time for playing, press your attack, drawing it out will only defeat you sooner." Another crash against his shield and Eldric mustered a flurry, he drove his arm out and pushed the axe away, trying to win approval he braced his sword and sent his lunging toward his brother's chestplate as he refound the balance of his axe. It didn't work, "Shi-"
His brother had abandoned the axe and dive bombed forward with his shield, catching Eldric, sword and body both under his hulking mass. Failing to maintain balance he went down like an a fallen tree, luckily his helmet absorbed all but the ringing in his ears. But his brother had turned his own sword on him. Catching his breath again, after having the wind drove from his system he complained, "What the hell was that?" "It's called winning brother, maybe you should try it sometime." Garland let him go free from under him as Eldric wrenched himself up. "I've beat your ass plenty of times."
"Now, now lads. You both fought well, you've got a lot more to learn yet. And while you won that fight again Rick, if it had been a real battle what would you have done afterwards? There's no use in tackling an opponent on a crowded field son." Garland submitted with a defeated shrug of his shoulders. Eldric meanwhile, had found his feet, and with a burst of energy shot into the side of his brother tackling him to the ground with a grunt. Their father only laughed.
"Good god dad get him off me!"
