But Joseph is a man true to his word, and even if it takes a little extra wonga...he'll usually keep that word.

He's a man with a healthy ego, and a proud bravado in his element. He's a man with a sense of humour, but that is often a mask for what he could be up to. Joseph is a very dangerous man, though such claims are often disputed when brought up - for a lack of evidence mainly. He pursues discretion for the aid of all, though he has been known to break convention, usually at the expense of people he just can't tolerate the presence of - he's a very thoughtful man.

Joseph was born the second son of Montgomery Hughes VI, Lord of Abain and his wife Epona Andraste Hughes, originally a Cemric Princess. Like any child born into a family of wealth and power he was provided with an education expected for one of his social station in life. Much of his childhood was spent with tutors, alongside his elder brother Micah, and it wasn't long before the two of them began their weapons training. Young Joseph was kidnapped when he was thirteen, by Cemric rebels who struck out at Abain. It was only a matter of a fortnight before another band of Cemric's loyal to House Hughes ambushed the rebels and freed him; yet it still wasn't a particulary thrilling experience - but in retrospect it made him stronger and gave him a firmer resolve to mature with. The punishment that followed for his abductors, was satisfying, and it gave him a sense of what it meant to be a Hughes of Abain.

The act of defiance would have further effect on the House, when Lord Montgomery had to wed Micah to a Cemric Princess of his own, to maintain the peace and secure an allaince between the two fanctions which sat in Abain and Dun Eamarth respectively. It was an insult to the house that they had to marry one of their own to a rebel, not to mention their heir and his brother, just to secure a peace in their holdings. Joseph's vunrability had allowed it to become a problem, problem enough that their own had been put to risk, and so from the day of his brother's wedding on - a wedding in which he was best man, he seeked to only better himself more and more.

Joseph pushed himself down the path of the warrior, taking up more and more crafts found within as he could. But he never truly loved it, he loved what he could accomplish with such skills, but he did not enjoy the performance of them. As the years went by he would fall back to particular weapons, taking up the cutlass as his main focus, and improving his dexterity with knives and other small deadly tools. He left the heavy lifting to his guards, and friends - which became a bit of an entourage for his dealings and habits. They never saw much activity but social gatherings in Abain. He did however quite like the prospects of command, and took to his field and naval training with a vigour unknown in his fighting. He rather enjoyed the power that came with such a position, while the fame of the fight went to those on the field and manning the decks, he got the personal satisfaction of enabling it - and being able to undo it whenever he liked.

Joseph came into his own when his father passed the reins of House Hughes to Micah, he stepped up and became Micah's right-hand man. Micah was a lot more capable that him in just about everything that mattered in running a city and leading a noble house; so he was happy to let him do his thing and follow. He took up the seniority in command of the Hughes armies, while allowing Micah to operate over him. Joseph quickly became the handson one of the brothers, he'd happily take a hit to keep the pride of the family - which now sat on Micah's image and not his. He became the bad cop in their political routine dance.

Montgomery and Micah actually found Jospeh a pleasing match, both politically and personally. Marcella Alysworth was promised to him in 215, and they married the following year. She was a good, loving wife, who distracted him from his job when he wasn't working. Joseph developed two distinct sides to him at this point, his family side and his business side. One was loving and softly caring, while the other was pretty much the opposite. Marcella and he had their first child, a girl, from their union on their wedding night. And then would have a son, Dominic the follwoing year; before having another daughter, their last child, Natalie in 222.

When their father passed away, House Hughes was left in total control of Micah and business took a new turn. Their black market revenues were doubled as more investment was poured in behind the scenes, Joseph was happy to see it. The dark quarter of Abain held a great deal of their tourist income - and he was rather familiar with those areas himself. Gambling became a big attraction in Abain, some establishment sactioned by law, and some not so much. "Gold is God." Joseph had a hand in these areas, though Noah would assume authority over it, which Joseph didn't mind in the least, his hands were usually full to sit on one mountain at a time. He became engrossed in every aspect of the family, being the cheerful faced go-to guy.

Just as everything seemed to be going so well, between the family unions and the soaring rise of Abain in wealth life was good, until the plague made it's way south. There was a sink in gold reserves in dealing with it, and while Joseph did not lose anyone in his own, immediate family with his wife, he lost his sister-in-law and niece - and he was very close with his brother's family, which left him stung. But between him and Micah they kept the catastrophy as in control as they could, and minimised their losses with wise spending. "Gold is God."

When Micah travelled to Dun Eamarth to give his wife a proper Cemric burial, Joseph went along, and in doing so managed to thwart an attempt on his brother's life. Having been there before himself - a target of the tribes, in the past, that old anger resurfaced, the old hate of young Joseph for the tribe. He saw his lord brother back to safety of Abain's walls. Where Micah organised and put a bounty on Prince Owyn's head, calling for the Cemric lord's death for his treachery.

With the plague's passing and the convergence of nobles in the capital, Micah has redoubled his efforts to reduce the deficit brought on by the the costs of the plague and then some. It was a prompt recovery, less than a year in fact. And now House Hughes and Abain are on the rise one again, soaring on ahead. With Owyn's death and the Cemric insurgence terminated it's time to set the eyes of ambition to new targets - and Arbrecht is first on the agenda. "Gold is God."
Writing Sample:

Joseph was seated at the table reviewing the documents that Micah and him had recently acquired. They were very revealing in nature, and painted a picture of a significant lapse in security and privacy pervasive throughout the Kingdom. The information had confirmed some suspicions, but they were not going to act on it just yet. Micah thought there was something to gain out of it, and the man was probably right. Joseph didn’t know many others to possess a mind equal to that of his older brother. Micah was to be looked up to, as he was a great leader and inspiration. This was the conclusion Joseph had come to after decades of being at Micah’s side.

“By the way, another letter arrived earlier this morning from Demere,” he added, picking up the sealed letter that was delivered and tossing it towards his brother at the head of the table. He was curious as to what it was, but it did bear a Hughes seal on it, so one of their family members was in Demere. He wasn’t sure which one, considering the tensions with Lord Forthwind. The man had long been avoiding House Hughes hoping his father’s debts would disappear, rather than grow with interest.

Joseph studied his brother with interest, and rubbed his beard with mild curiosity. Realizing his brother was busy reading the letter, the younger brother went back to sorting documents into their proper piles. It seemed there was a lot of work to do, and there would be even more of a pile at his office in Abain.

Oh, I wake up to this surprise. Yay.

I don't see anything wrong with the profile, it honours the character and is pretty uniform.

Approved.
