LIAM FORTHWIND

-------------------------------

[OOC Information]

Your Name: MrS
RP Experience: N/A
Your Character's Player Base: Harry Lloyd

** There have been various players of this character, so I have quoted all the work that is not mine. Kuran, Tan, Dirk, Marty and Wren's applications have been used in this one.

-------------------------------

[Basic Information]

Character Name:Liam Forthwind
Character Age: 22
Gender: Male
Birthday (including year): August 25, 219
Home Castle/City: Demere
House: Forthwind

-------------------------------
[Appearance]

Quote:
He is a slender man, one whom is best suited to the scholarly arts that he so enjoys, it does not mean there is a lack in his own physical strength. Liam is man of whipcord appearance and wiry nature and he is happy enough not to be the one who is likely to win any kind of wrestling match.
When he is working on his own pursuits he will often wear the simplest of clothes, especially when their is a chance they will get...ruined. And he prefers to wear light clothes. Within Demere he rarely carries anything more than a dagger as defence, though he naturally owns a sword and armour. His hair was always a dark black/brown colour, up until a few weeks ago, when an experiment of his went wrong. Since then his hair has been a deathly white, he is unsure if it will turn back.

Overall he cares little for his appearance

-------------------------------
[Personality]
Quote:
Liam is, at heart, a man of learning. His greatest passions in life are the sciences: mathematics, biology, chemistry, astronomy, and especially physics. He finds a subtle, sublime beauty in the inner workings of the universe, finding the same beauty in a chemical reaction or mathematical equation that most people would find in art or poetry. He is an avid reader, and savours the simple pleasure of sitting down with a good book, on anything from philosophy to calculus. A true renaissance man, Liam has dabbled in almost every field of study under the sun. Liam has dedicated a sizable portion of his life to pursuits of the mind, and, as a result, has developed a swift and keen intellect. Liam would like nothing more than to dedicate his life to science, unfortunately for him, he has responsibilities which make this impossible.

Liam's love of learning is balanced by an equally strong sense of duty: duty to his house, to his county, and to the people of Demere. Having served in the military, Liam is more aware of how lucky he was to not be born a peasant than most of the nobility, and with this comes a feeling of responsibility towards them. Through an accident of birth, he was placed in a position of authority over them; abusing that position would make him the worst kind of scum. One of Liam's greatest fears is failing to live up to what is expected of him, and being heir to house Forthwind means that he has been saddled with suffocating, almost impossible expectations.

He feels pressured to match, if not succeed, not only the administrative genius of his father, but the tactical brilliance of his uncle. Battle is something that Liam has no taste for, although not for a lack of skill; he is both a cunning tactician and skilled horseman (as one would hope, considering the unhealthy amount of time he has spent studying those subjects). He finds the military sciences to be impossibly dry, yet he would allow himself to be worked half to death before complaining about it. Although he would never say it, he sometimes envies his sisters for the freedom they have.

Being a man of learning, Liam's mind is constantly awash with ideas, although he sometimes has difficulty putting those thoughts into words. Being a staunch rationalist, he trusts the cold, guiding hand of logic over instinct and emotion. Very few things anger him; he firmly believes that no amount of anger, no matter how justified, can possibly improve a situation. In conversation, those who know well him will find him to be warm, yet forthright. To strangers, he is more reserved. He is sometimes overly cautious around strangers, being slow to trust and quick to see the worst in people. He can often be quick to judge others, particularly those perceives to somehow be shirking their responsibilities. He has no head for politics, being unconfident among strangers, a terrible liar, and preferring to always be candid with others. When you have gained his trust, however, Liam is an endlessly loyal friend and trusty ally; for example, he would go to hell and back for his sisters.
His House words are Always True, and he takes those words very literally. He is loyal to his liege Lord. Liam is no great political mastermind, he hates the skiving games that are played among the High Lords. However he believes it is his duty to learn how to ''play the game'', but no doubt he will make mistakes before he is able to do so properly.

Liam is a perfectionist. Whenever he sets his mind to something he will except nothing less. Even if he has no personal taste for the subject. For example military affairs. He finds them dull, boring and dry. Yet when it came for him to ''do his duty'' he put everything he had into it. Liam is willing to take the advice of those around him, but only if he trusts them explicitly, as he knows there are people who would be willing to take advantage of his position for their own ends. For this reason Liam has rather few friends. How does he know they like him for who he is, and not for his name?

Duty is important to Liam, and it is for that reason he married his wife. He does not love her, and he can be a cold towards her, even avoiding her when possible. He is well aware that neither of them got what they wanted from their partner. He would of preferred a more intellectual wife, or at least one who could understand his interests, and she would no doubt of dreamt of a tall, strapping Knight, not a bookworm renaissance man.

His brilliant mind can be a little eratic at times. He has been known to stop what he was doing in the middle of an act because he has thought of a more interesting idea, or a better way to prove a hypothesis.

[History]

Quote:
Liam was born five weeks premature, on a cloudless, stifling summer day. That he survived at all seemed to defy all probability, let alone surviving entirely unharmed. Other than the difficult birth, Liam was, according to his mother, an unusually easy baby to raise. He rarely cried, and was always impeccably well-behaved, a trend that would continue for the rest of his life. His intelligence was evident from an early age; he began learning to read at just 3 years old. This coincided with the birth of his sister, Marisée, who was alternated between being an absolute joy to be around and being deeply, profoundly irritating. He very quickly got used to no longer being an only child. If he had a problem with the sudden drop in attention, he never said anything about it; in fact, he seemed to prefer being coddled less.

During childhood, Liam was something of a social pariah. Even as a small child, Liam preferred more cerebral pastimes to his peers. While other boys his age were brash and loud, Liam was quiet and reserved. While the other boys played Knights and Cemrics, Liam was usually curled up somewhere with a book. Liam's second sister, Melari, was born when he was 5. He never got the chance to spend as much time with his sisters as he would've liked, as when he turned 6, his lessons began in earnest. It was to be expected, he was the heir, after all. For the sake of the people of Demere, Liam would have to learn to run a city, manage an army and win a battle as quickly as possible. They started out simple enough: learning to add and subtract, the names of animals, the names of countries and so on, the sort of thing that any noble child his age would be expected to know. However, as he got older, and it became increasingly obvious that Liam was a fair bit smarter than average, the lessons got progressively harder, and took up a larger and larger portion of his time.

The next few years were largely uneventful. His tuition grew more and more strenuous; by the time he was 12, it was so time-consuming that it practically defined his life. It was around this time that he discovered his passion for science and discovery; the flame of curiosity had been kindled by a particularly talented natural philosophy tutor. Unfortunately for him, learning science was something that had to be relegated to his free time, as, in the eyes of his family, there were far more important things to be learned. Thanks to his intelligence, Liam felt obligated to not only be successor to his father Arland, but to his uncle, Bradyn, the military genius and Authority of War. His education branched out from history and mathematics to cover logistics, battlefield tactics and an assortment of other inescapably boring subjects, punctuated only by the occasional riding or fencing lesson.

By the time he was seventeen, he was considered old enough for his first military assignment. Cemric raids had been particularly fierce that year, and the city of Abaín had called for reinforcements from House Forthwind. A small Cemric army had been spotted not far from the city, and the majority of the Abaínian armed forces were tied up elsewhere. Liam's job was twofold: during the battle, he was to serve within the heavy cavalry, as is to be expected of a noble of his standing, and outside of battle, he filled a minor advisory role. The operation went mostly according to plan: the Forthwind soldiers were both more numerous and better equipped than the Cemric raiders, and they won with only minor casualties, although Liam took a rather painful but otherwise non-life-threatening spear-wound to the waist while charging some exposed Cemric archers. Although the battle was traumatic in its own way, to Liam, it was far less painful than the return.

While on campaign, little news of the plague had come to Liam, only rumours and hearsay, ominous whisperings around the campsite of the burning of bodies in Arbrecht. While the plague felt like something enormous and terrifying, it also felt strangely distant, something far away that was, essentially, someone else's problem. It seemed a lot less distant when Liam returned home, almost a year later, shortly after his 18th birthday, to find that not only had the plague spread to Caelain, but that his mother died of it only a few days before his arrival. His grief was matched only by his shock; one minute, he had a mother, the next minute, he did not. It felt as though not just a family member, but an entire part of his life had been taken by the plague.

After his mother's death, Liam made a point of spending more time with his sisters. There were three reasons for this: one, he was the oldest, and felt he had a responsibility to be there for his younger siblings, particularly Marisée, who had to fill the void left by her mother's death for Melari. Two, after the battle of Abaín and the sudden passing of his mother, Liam had a new appreciation for the finality of death; he knew, more than ever, that he could die at any time, and if he did, he didn't want to have any regrets. The third reason was simple; he hadn't seen either of them in almost year, and had intensely missed them both.

After returning from Abaín, his workload dropped somewhat. Having fought in a minor war, he was now considered mature enough to have a hand in the running of the city, but he was also no longer inundated with constant lessons. His study of science intensified; he was no longer content with simply reading about it, and with his newfound free time, he began running some experiments of his own. Halfway into his 20th year, he invented a device to assist him in his research on astronomy; he found that if he placed a convex lens in front of an eyepiece, he could view far-off objects with far greater clarity. He called this device a “telescope”.

[Writing Sample]

Liam had lost count of what the time was, the sun had disappeared from the sky hours ago, and was now showing signs of return. He was sitting in his private study, the walls were covered in parchment, that had meticulous drawings of designs. Some were full of only numbers, they made little sense to those who had not studied such things. Liam had though, and he would spend his entire day learning more if he could.

He was scratching a long equation onto a piece of paper when another idea popped into his mind. Immediately he dropped the quill and moved towards the window. Resting on the stone ledge was a telescope, his own creation. He placed his right eye to it's lense and began to glance at the night's sky. He imagined the planets that were moving in the heavens. He found it beautiful.

Liam spent the better part of the next hour there, crouched so he could get a good view of the stars, and he only stood up when his back was aching so bad he thought he would collapse any minute. Liam could see the sun now, a blinking eye rising over the horizon, and he knew he would need to get some sleep soon. He would have work to do in a few hours. Not the fascinating work he chose to do himself, but assisting his Lord Father in the running of the Household. And he would probably have to visit his wife.

He sighed. It was not that he hated his wife, Liam didn't even dislike her, but Liam found his DeLauncey Lady vain and dull. She had no interest in his pursuits, she had no love for the leather bound books he cared for, and her favourite pass time was holding a mirror to her face. Liam tried to avoid her when he could, but he had a duty to her, and Liam always did his duty.

Tis true, Harry Lloyd is a random PB choice buuuuut their mother was a Fleurant. It's feasible that he could be blond and maybe doing something so drastically different appearance-wise will break the character's curse!

I approve. -Renna

P.S. whoa, looking at these two characters side-by-side is really weird. .__.

PPS. Do you mean "heir accidentally died" or "hair accidentally dyed?" Choose the right one and edit as needed. LOL

The PB was left over from a previous player, but as the actor himself, if that makes sense. When possible I like to pick a picture which makes the character look Medieval-y. I've edited the timeline.
